40 HP Mercury Shifting Problems

I got a forty horse merc. that when its in the lake it wont engage the reverse gear...but when I took it out and ran it with the ear muffs on it it engaged just fine... any suggestions?? forward works just fine.

Remote control cable adjustment. You need to make the cable push the shifter backwards a bit more than now.

Is than an easy thing to do or would i be better if taking it to a shop?

2 assistants required.---One to operate the control box and one to slowly rotate the prop while shifting to reverse.--------Observe how things move. Then see how turning the " barrel " on the cable forward will move the shift further back.-------Easy and straight forward.
