"Hi,

I don't think the magnets are available separately, as the flywheel is listed as a single assembly in the parts listings. You can try for example this vendor's lookup to locate your exact model and serial number range to find the original part number of your flywheel:

http://www.mercruiserparts.com/selectModels3.asp?type_id=MERC

With the number in hand, it's much easier to shop around for the part. From a quick glance, most of the 40 hp's of your vintage seem to list the flywheel as No Longer Available, so an outboard salvage shop might be the next place to contact. You might get lucky with an eBay search as well.

Good luck!"

I have the same problem- 40 HP

I have the same problem- 40 HP 1982 mercury- 1 magnet came loose and destroyed itself--Was told newer 20 and 25 HP have the same magnets and also the 24XS -whatever that is. Have not had any luck finding a replacement flywheel or magnet locally. Keep me posted if you have any luck locating parts.

"keep your eyes out for a 35hp

"keep your eyes out for a 35hp flywheel also, 84 to 89. The 40 hp turned into a 4 cylinder in 84, so they just re-badged the original 40 to a 35hp"
