I have a 40 HP (1965)

I have a 40 HP (1965) Johnson set up as short shaft and I need a long shaft. How hard to do this for a novice and where can I find a lower unit? Is this something I should attemp myself?

"If it's anything like my motor you will need a 5" leg extension and cover sleeves and then extended driveshaft, water lines and linkage/electrical depending on your lower unit gear setup etc. Find your model number and start looking at the exploded diagrams of you motor on BRP.com to get an idea. When I look up my lower unit, it shows both long and short options and all of the components needed. That will give you some basic concepts of the change and then if you are still interested - get a hold of your manual and accessories manual through this site (top left) to give yourself the detailed steps."

"Oh bugger, sorry about that mate! What's your model number? Maybe I could search the web by that instead and see where it comes up. Unless someone else can help in the interim?"

"The Best way to go would be to buy a long shaft parts motor identical to your own...These are readily available in non running condition for $100.00 or less. In addition to the long shaft parts, you would also have a supply of parts to do any future repairs. Try your local mom and pop marinas or place a free ad in the boat section of Craigs List. I have one of these motors on a Boston Whaler and years ago I purchased a parts motor for $50.00...it currently resides in my Basement in NY...wish you were closer...If you are not familiar with Craigs List, here is the link...It offers free online ads and is available in most countries and and states
