40 HP Johnson Water Pump Question

I have rebuilt the water pump on a 1993 40 HP Johnson model TJ40ELETB and reinstalled it. In the kit there were two rubber grommets that I couldn't figure out where they went so I left them off thinking they were probably to be used on different model. The The part # on the rebuild kit is 0438592, the Johnson kit. In this kit there were two grommets the size of the shaft. one came in the bag with the impeller so I put it in the recess on the lower side of the impeller. The other one I have no idea where it goes since there is not a recess in the shaft anywhere to put it. The third grommet is approximately 2" diameter and again I have no idea where it would have gone. The kit I removed was totally different than the new one I got. The new one has a solid impeller housing while the old one is like the parts diagram with round plate and liner. None of these grommets were used in the installation of the old Kit. Have I left something out or do I fill it with grease and move on. Any help would be appreciated.

Guessing here can be expensive.-------One grommet goes over the driveshaft and sits on top of the pump.------One goes on the waterpump outlet to seal with the water passage in the exhaust housing.-------Nothing is shown to fit under the impeller.

Racerone my terminalogy is screwed up this morning. I mistakenly referrde to these three pieces as grommets but they are o rings. Your are correct in your answer and I have these grommets on and in the right place. The two shaft size o rings and the larger o ring are the problem. I might add that one of the shaft size o rings came in the plastic bag with the impeller which is why I assumed it went into the recess on the impeller. Sorry for the confusion.

As I Stated in my original post I had already installed the gearcase back on the motor. I spent the day rebuilding the two carbs and started the motor to see if the water pump was working. It had a stream of water coming out about the size of a wood pencil so I assume this means the water pump is working properly eventhough I have two o rings left over. For future readers of this post I received in my kit one plate gasket which I installed first, one plate installed 2nd, one o ring in the package with the impeller installed 3rd, then the cam on the shaft 4th, one impeller with the recess in the impeller installed down to fit over the o ring 5th, one solid metal impeller housing down over the impeller 6th, one plastic housing with the one discharge tube grommet, and the large o ring housing seal 7th, 4 screws bolting the housing to the pump 8th, and the one housing grommet slid down over the shaft and fited onto the housing. In the kit was another o ring the same size as the one I used under the impeller and one o ring about 1 1/2 inches in diameter that I did not use. As a first time boater this forum is a great means for how to information and for those that responded to my post I really appreciate it.

No need to take it apart, according to my research the newer motors use an o-ring on the bottom of the impeller.------I believe the owner did an excellent repair job !

This morning I spoke with a tech at johnson evinrude BRP and he says the o ring does go on the underside of the impeller in the recess so I do have that right however he says that the housing gets two o rings one large one that fits around the outside of the housing to seal the housing to the plate, and another one , the 1 1/2 inch one, goes on the underside of the housing in a small recess around the shaft. This is the o ring I left out and he says it has to be there. Since there was not one on the old one I don't see why it would have to be one on the new one. if you look at the picture of the Johnson water pump kit you will see this o ring along with the large housing seal o ring and the shaft grommet that sits on top of the housing.
