40 hp johnson problem,

Hey everyone, just joined up to what seems like a great site!

I have a 14' fiberglass runabout, with a 64 40 hp johnson on it. starts fine runs fine with the hood off or that choke access door open but as soon as i put the hood on or close to door, the engine wont rev all the way up. wel actually, it will but after a couple seconds it bogs down to what sounds about half throttle. open that door and it picks back up and a bit of exhaust smoke comes out. I just replaced the seal around the hood and that didnt help at all.

Any help would be really appretiated.

sounds like a exhaust leak somewhere.

It sound like it is sucking in dirty air or is starving for air. It would probably help to drill a couple of breather holes in the hood. It would make it a bit nosiy, but it sounds like it needs more/fresher air. What type of air access does it have?
