i have a 40 hp evinrude 1990-1

i have a 40 hp evinrude 1990-1993 im guessing.the problem is when you start it up it idles for a second and then revs to the moon a buddy just put a new fuel pump on it and it did not fix the problem.what could it be?

"Never heard of this one. If it were mine, I would pull the front cover off of the carbs, and check the throttle plates to make sure they are fully closed at idle. Also make sure the ignition advance hasn't come loose. I would be looking for a bad carburetor mounting gasket. Also, does this engine use a primer system or a conventionaly choke? If it uses a primer, I would make sure that it is shutting off and not just dumping fuel into the engine all the time."
