40 HP Evinrude, 1990, Model VE40TLESR, Gearcase & Bearing assembly to replace water pump/upper seals

I am looking for a known procedure to follow to replace the water pump and upper seals. I have already changed the seal and O-ring on the prop shaft, to try to correct a problem with water getting in the lower unit oil and that did not solve the problem. So now I want to change the upper seals and the water pump while i have it apart.
It looks like there are 5 bolts that hold the gearcase housing to the exhaust housing. When one removes those bolts and any required brackets in that area, will the gearcase/bearing assembly be able to be removed, or is there something that needs to be done with the shift rod to disconnect it?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Shift rod needs to be disconnected.----Removing the starter motor makes it easier to find the shift rod pin.-----Shift rod also has a seal.----Shift rod needs to be set to an exact dimension on assembly !!----Those gearcases are NOT robust.-----Use the best oil you can find.

Thanks much for the prompt reply. When you say the shift rod needs to be set to an exact dimension on assembly. Can that exact dimension be measured on disassembly, or if not what is recommended to get that dimension upon reassembly?
