40 hp 1982 propeller shaft pin correct position

When disassembling , the pin, about 5/16 D x 2 L inches [flat on one end and pointed on other], fell out of end of propeller shaft. Does the flat or pointed end insert in the propeller shaft? Thanks

Flat end goes in first.------Pointy end sticks out.
