4 stroke 40 hp TLRA not firing

I have had someone look at the motor and they have rebuilt carbs, checked compression, and the spark plus were firing when he used a remote starter. However the engine does not seem to fire when the key is turned. The mechanic has said something about the electronic control module, but is not sure if that is it.

A little background on the motor: The motor had been sitting for a while and I had it running in my drive way(with water attached). Everything was fine until I put a new propeller on the motor. Once I did that, I started the engine again and ran it for about a minute. About that time there was a loud sound (as if you tried to start an engine with a semi dead battery and it has half a crank) and the engine shut off. Now we cant get the motor started again.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

It sounds like the key switch has shorted out. first off I would put a spark tester on one plug wire and turn the key to see if there is spark, if not then check the same way with a remote starter withe the key in the on position, if there is still no spark then it is time to order a manual if you don't already have one.

thanks yall, we pulled a spark plug out with and put the connection back on and when I turn the key it did send a spark. We ordered the manual last week and it should be here today or tomorrow. I guess the first thing we will check with the manual is the ECM.

Wouldnt it make sense if I sprayed some gas in the carbs and turned the key, I should get at least a little fire instead of just a crank?

thanks again, figured it out. It was the woodruff key that attaches to the flywheel, it had broken off, throwing off the timing. $0.80 fix, not too bad.
