4 HP Not so Deluxe Evinrude

Hi, guys,I am a new member and should have come here first, but anyway here I am. I am in the middle of changing the water pump impellor on a 1988 Evinrude 4HP Deluxe outboard. When I pulled the gearcase off the lower unit the drive shaft stayed in the motor. And I cannot get it out of the engine, I know it is supposed to just come right out but I put visegrips on the shaft and hit it with a 20 oz. framing hammer and I mean really hit it and no go, it's still in there, any ideas as to how to get it out?

Better yet. Mix up some ATF and Acetone 50-50 and use that. Forget the WD-40. Also you can hang it upside by the drive shaft and let the weight of the motor help it.

So far no luck getting the drive shaft out, whacked it with a rubber hammer yesterday, I'll wait a few more days and try it again

Someone didn't grease the splines!

Being such a small horsepower engine... go the short and fast route.................

Remove the powerhead and the driveshaft along with it. Clamp a non bearing portion of the driveshaft in a vice. Have a friend hold/support the powerhead while you tap the base of the powerhead with a 2x2, 2x4, a piece of wood of your choosing, and a good size hammer.

You know you'll want to clean those crankshaft splines up good anyway.

Well guys no luck so far, whacked it again today, both ways in and out, looks like I am going to pull the powerhead, I am out of town for a few days, and will keep you posted when I get back.,Some of my reluctance to take it all apart was the fact that I live about an hours drive from the dealer and he has to order every thing I need, as he hasn't any parts in stock for this outboard, thanks ribber

Another thing that might work.
Give the end of the shaft where it goes into the powerhead a blast or two with a CO2 extinguisher.
I recall this being a method of getting a stuck distributor out of an engine block back in the day.
The CO2 will make the driveshaft cold, which will cause it to shrink down just a tiny little bit.
The trick will be to pull that driveshaft out before it expands again. Or before the crankshaft gets cold too, and shrinks down with it.
So you will have to be quick.
FWIW, hope this helps!

Hi there back again, still no luck. To remove the powerhead do I take out the four bolts that are inside the motor cover and point down or the 6 bolts out side the motor and are up near the housing? The inside bolts look like they are 1/4" bolts and have washers under their heads or the outside bolts it looks like they have 3/8" heads.

The bolts that are inside the pan obviously do not screw into the powerhead... it's the outside 3/8" bolts that need to be removed.

Well DUH , I guess that makes sense, thanks for your help, I feel kinda stupid right now, will keep you updated, thanks again ribber

No need to apologize joereeves, I should have picked up on that myself, but anyway the drive shaft is finally out of the motor, thanks to all your helpful hints and advise I finally got it apart and now can get parts ordered and put it back together, thanks again, ribber

Well, I almost put this back together, but who knew, there was 2 different model 4 horse Evinrude motors in 1988, as luck would have it I didn't get the right gaskets, and now another week will pass before I get the correct gaskets, ah, I didn't want to put it together anyway. ribber

:)I followed joereeves advice and removed the powerhead, put a set of soft jaws in my vice and supported the powerhead with a rope up to the ceiling, then got out a 5 pound hammer and a steel drift punch and let fly, after about 1/2 an hour things started to move, so I sprayed in more lube and kept hitting , when it came apart the splines were rusted right solid so I wire brushed them and dug out my dremmel tool and cleaned up the internal splines as best I could, then scraped out the rest with a sharp file, the drive shaft now fits all the way back in with just a little wiggling, now I just need gaskets, and back together it goes, thanks for all your help guys I really appriciate it, ribber
