I picked up a 4 hp mariner, I believe early 90's that supposedly needs a new stator to get going. The serial number is 0a898159. Can anyone verify the year? Checked out the cylinder and everything looks super clean, good compression etc. Is it possible that the stator is the problem getting it going? If so does my motor have a high and low speed stator? And how would I replace them. Thanks in advance.

Your motor should be a Mariner by Mercury '92 model. You need to get a manual and perform test before condemn the ignition system.
One or more of these coils cause your loss of spark: 1) exciter coil 2) pulse coil 3) ignition coil and 4) damper. Or simply a lack of grounding or kill circuit grounded.
Good luck.

So i finally checked out my coils. Pulser and Igniton coils tested where they should. Ignition coil didnt even move the tester, so I think I found the problem. There is a little hole in it (looks like something blew out of it) and it is just crazy that the little caused it to be bad. Before I purchase a new one, would any one else agree this is the right conclusion?
