4 hp Evinrude model e4brcta for a compression test

Hi, I am taking my 4 hp Evinrude 2 cylinder, model no.e4brcta for a compression test but I need to find out what the pressure should be, any ideas?

It is no specified reading.
Important that both cyl's are within 10% of each other.
Anything above 80 should be good.
It all depend how hard you pull when testing!

Did the test, both cylinders where the same around 90.:)
The engine seized over the weekend and was free again in half an hour.
It was pumping water when I left the harbour but 5 mins later seized!!
I have had it in the wheelie bin and It appears to be pumping fine but the head is getting to hot!
checked the impellor it seems fine apart from some hard gunk under the stainless plate the impellor sits on.
took of the exhaust plate and found the water channel slightly blocked, I then blasted the head cooling channel with air.
The head and exhaust plate is still hot, I can hold my fingers on for 1/2 seconds.
I am worried about it seizing again, should I take of the cylinder head and check the cooling channels?
Does anyone know where I can get gaskets in the uk?

Two good sources of spares in the UK are Oakley Marine, aka Outboards-direct in Brighton, www.outboards-direct.co.uk

and Willsmarine in Kingsbridge, www.willsmarine.co.uk

The water passage in the head (It is that figure of 8 that you can see around the edge) can easily become blocked.
This picture shows the head water passage although actually an 8hp model, after cleaning.

It may also be worth separating the power head from the leg and checking there

This sort of thing can happen if someone has previously used silicone sealant

You checked the impeller ... but put the old one back ???!

The places you will not be able to touch and maintain contact are the head around the spark plugs and the un-cooled exhaust manifold cover plate. Otherwise you should be able to touch the power-head and maintain contact for several seconds

E4BRCTA is a 1983 Belgium made model. Quote the model number when enquiring after parts.

The pics are very informative,
I will remove the leg and check the water passage.
I also think removing the head would be a good idea for piece of mind, I have owned this engine for 4 years now and its a great little engine, I don't want to kill it for the sake of the price of a couple of gaskets.
yes I did leave the old impellor in, it looked in good condition.do you suggest I replace it?

Get the rubber grommet for the water tube (shown on the pic) as well!!!
What you need:
Head gasket
Exhaust cover gasket
Powerhead to leg gasket
Impeller
Upper grommet water tube.
Go to:
http://www.boats.net and check out the parts catalog for numbers
