Hi all. New to this forum, appreciate any help.
1973 Johnson 4 HP 4R73C Motor is low hours, sailboat aux power. Complete teardown due to minor overheat. Replacing pistons.
Got confused during disassembly, now can't remember which side of rods face up. Rods are babbit, not needle bearings. They have small notches at the junction with the caps on one side. Possibly for oil to the bearing? They have cast p/n 27168 on one side, and a 1 (or a 2) on the other side.
Which side faces up ???
Thanks for your help.

Thanks fdrgator for the advice. I assume you are correct as I was leaning that way myself. I am not a professional mechanic, but I am an old guy who has been wrenching for decades in an amateur way. I often look for reassurance from other experienced guys. I have the service manual, and had looked at that pic. My hesitation was due to the angle of the pic It doesn't show the crown of the piston, so I wasn't sure which way they laid it down for the pic
I had already assembled it the other way in error. When you have loose pieces in your lap, and turning them over and looking at them in various orientations, it is easy to think "mirror image" and get it wrong. So, after your post, I redid them. Had to boil them to expand the piston. I hate press fit when I don't have proper equipment. Making progress now Thanks.
