Hello all, I have a little problem with my 1998 v6. I forgot to winterize it now i have I busted block. I removed the motor last weekend and need to get it back running ASAP. I'm looking at junkyard motors. Thoughts? concerns? Options for parts houses that my have a long block in stock and also a good source for gasket kits ect.

Thanks,

-Sven

ps always winterize. I'm slow on the uptake.

Ayuh,.... you'll need a long block, from '96, or newer,... Junkyard or reman is yer choice,...

Pull your casting numbers, and replace this engine with like components.

1996 4.3L is likely a roller camshaft engine.
Roller cams and cam followers can be re-used if in good condition.
Bring your Marine cam/followers over to the replacement engine.

Since this was Raw Water cooled, you'll want to replace the casting core plugs with brass, and perhaps the head gaskets.

.

we are able to get the 4.3L engines let me know if you are interested we do not have them in stock we would have to order it and they are brand new engines

Ok update time, I got a junkyard motor with matching casting #. It's in the boat. Now I need to install the distributor. How does one time these things?

Got it running this afternoon, runs good. You line up #1 cylinder compression stroke and the timing mark. Line up rotor for #1 that's it. Not bad for a backyard mechanic from the coast. Thanks all for the input.

Did you bring the Marine camshaft over to this junk yard engine, and did you change out the head gaskets w/ a Marine set that will work when raw water cooled?

.

No I did not. Did Volvo even do those things when they got the engines from GM? At any rate this thing only has to last the week at the lake then I plan to see if this motor comes out for rebuild or swap with a blown 502.

These were ordered from GM as Marine Engines, and already equipped with the correct head gaskets, casting core plugs, and cam profile.

You're OK then...... just watch out for water reversion within the exhaust ports.
While this may sound absolutely counter-intuitive, once out of the water and back on your trailer, do a 3 or 4 second dry start, and blow your exhaust dry.

Your sea water pump impeller will be wet, and there should be no risk to it.

Yikes!

Good advise on blowing the water out of the exhaust. I really like this engine and drive combo in my boat. I wanted to do a complete rebuild but, that will have to wait till this winter. I still have the original engine. Until then the "Astro Van Motor" lives on.
