Hi

Today took the boat out for the first time this season. Ran great on our way out. When we came back in engine made an odd noise...then cut off. We looked under seat and saw smoke and oil. What did we do to it first? and if you have an idea what it is...what did we do to make it happen? Any help would be appreciated. Kinda ruined the 4th of July plans.

thank you!

"Made an odd engine noise" ? What kind of odd engine noise? Like rattling or knocking before she shut down?

How much oil in bilges? Like maybe 3 or 4 quarts? If so, then my first guess would be a leaking oil pan / filter / hose dumped the oil into the bilges and then you were running with no oil in engine. If that is the case, then (I know you don't want to hear this, but) you may be in the market for a new motor.

was it winterized properly?
was it test run on muffs with all oil levels checked, temp, oil, volts, shifting?
"odd noise" banging, clanking, hissing, etc?

check the oil pressure switch on the block also it still there maybe rusted thru and fell off.

How high on the stick is the oil and is it milky ?

it's actually gotten worse. We found the problem w/ the oil, it was the pressure sending unit. It had a pin hole. But now from whatever damage that caused? We threw a rod. Un real. Sitting in the rain in the middle of a high traffic area for 2 hours before the coast guard pulled us in. At least it sounded like a rod but guess what? we still have oil and pressure! (always a bright side)

The noise was a grinding pinging noise. and we heard it again last night before the bang. So my guess is the oil pressure thingy was a warning to something else.

Thanks for the replies!

yes it was winterized properly. No milky stuff. Just plain nasty oil in the bottom of the boat. Brightside? the hull is sparkly clean now! :)
