4.3 Mercruiser wont stay running

Just bought a 01 Tahoe Q3 with a carberated 4.3 Mercruiser stern drive. Last weekend took it out and it ran and started fine. Heading back to the dock it started to spit an sputter. Tried to limp back to the dock. Got towed in close to the docks. Tried it again and it ran great for 5 minutes then spit, sputtered an occasionally back fired. It would crank up everytime. Went and replaced my first thought which was fuel pump and fuel filter. Replaced those now it will crank and start up then die. Other times it wont fire. Pulled h the carb and let it breathe then it ran great. Used the advance throttle to let it run up a little bit. Turned it off and back on 3-5 times worked great. Went to put it on throttle and it died. Wouldn't start again after that. Any thoughts??
 
Right. I recommend you pump out your tank and add fresh fuel with a stabilizer.


You can prove out the need for this by running the motor off an outboard tank.
