4.3 Mercruiser flooding and sputtering at takeoff.

Hi guys, i'm new here and i am having a problem with my boat. I have a 4.3 Mercruiser which has started to have difficulty starting. When it does start it seems to idle lower than normal and runs kind of rough. When you try to give it gas it will stall out unless you work the throttle back and forth ever so slightly until you get the RPMs up to around 900. Once you get the RPMs up the boat will run but still seems a little weak. When starting the motor and trying to get the RPMs up you can smell gas and at times see white smoke coming from behind the boat. Thank you for reading my post any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Bondo, Thanks for the reply. I went out and looked at it today and there are some wires disconnected around the carburetor and one of them was the wire going to the electric choke. Do you think that could be causing it? There was one or two other wires laying there as well. Do you know how i can find out where these go?

Nope, I doubt the choke is causin' the problem, but should be fixed when ya rebuild the carb,.....

It's most likely starvin' for gas, not floodin' out,.....

Most wirin' harnesses have unused wires in 'em,..... some are used in different configurations of the same motor in any given year vintage,....
