4.3 engine alignment

I am new to forum and have a 1995 4.3 with bad starter bolts. If I pull the motor to repair and don't change the adjustment of motor mounts, do I still need an alignment tool to re install? Thanks in advance

In 1995, Volvo Penta was still producing the last of the AQ series drives right along side of the Gimbal suspension drives..... SX or DP-S.
Do you have an AQ series, or a Gimbal system drive?

If SX or DP-S style, annual engine drive coupler alignment should be performed regardless.
If AQ series, you should at least check alignment by using the triangulation procedure.

But let's say that the alignment is OK now...... if no adjustments have been changed, you should be able to R&R the engine without the need.
But again..... it's never a bad idea to check this.

As for the starter motor..... not all starter motor nose housing are like today.... especially with the HTGR/PMGR starter motors.
(the depth of the bolt bores may not be the same between nose housings)

If the bolts are too long, they will bottom out in the cylinder block threads before fully clamping the nose housing.
This is what causes the bolts to fail and/or snap off.

When buying a new one, it's best to make sure that new correct bolts come with the motor .... or at least check the existing bolt length against the bolt bores.

Thanks for the great info. I have the SX drive and the previous owner has striped the threads that hold the starter in. He drilled the outboard hole thru and installed a bolt and nut. But will have to drill and tap for insert for inboard hole. Starter seems ok an will turn engine, if you help hold it in alignment. Sounds like it will be a good idea to have an alignment tool in my toolbox.
