"(1)4.3L omc would not

"(1)4.3L omc would not go into reverse. Would go foward and neutral. Then got stuck in forward and only after runing awhile and throtle up and down could I get out o gear. Now it will not go into forward or reverse.I took the cover off at the shift cables where they go to the lower unit and it seems they are tight and not broken.Any other sugestions. I read about the fluid being full, could this be the oroblem of not going in gear?
(2)The trim on this boat lifts and lowers the front of the engine. I never seen any thing like this. The pump lifts it to put the I/o in but seems to let it drop down . Will not hold it up. I am assuming I might need some o rings or fluid but can not seem to find the resivoir. I also have had no luck on finding any infp about this type of trim. I called a few parts places and most have no clue. Any info woul be greatly appreciated."

"Your unit is 1985, not 1987 that's why the parts places you are calling don't have a clue. Your system is known as Selectrim and All seals for the trim rams are available through your local OMC/Evinrude dealer - you can order them online at shop.evinrude.com- under "engine mounting group" -it's about $150 for all the seals
I used to put the trim seal kits on eBay (with better quality seals than the OMC stuff) but it was a major hassle....I can look - I might still have a seal kit kicking around (for about half the $)

As far as shifting, sounds like first, your ESA (electronic shift assist) was not working, and someone has been yanking the drive OUT of gear as one has to when the ESA is inoperative.
Now your $400 shift cable is probably toast as a result of the yanking. The ESA has to be functional on these units. The cable might look good in the shift converter box atop the engine, but what does it look like the rest of the 12 feet of cable.....the fact that's it's tight is positive - you can remove the cable ends from the converter housing and with engine off get someone to rotate the prop by hand and gently tug one cable, then the other and see how the engagement feels....
Remove the battery from the boat before messing with those cable...if they touch +B any of the dozen or so exposed terminals in that area, the cables desintegrate in a flash of electrical arcing"
