Hello, new to the group here. I have stumbled upon a Merc 200 20 hp. My brother in law works for an rv and marine place, they threw it in the garbage so I figured it would be a great experience to dig into it. Built an engine stand, got it on there sprayed fuel in the carb pulled the string and it purred like a kitten for 5 seconds. Still went ahead and dug into it deeper. If a marine shop throws an engine away it's probable there is deeper issues than meets the eye. Pistons look ok, have not done comp. test yet.
Things I am going to replace/check over the winter.
Carberator/spark plugs
Water pump assembly (is bad)
Lower unit oil
Points/condensers
It does appear the flywheel and coils have been replaced recently they are a bright new red color with no wear on the flywheel.
I have the lower unit off, I drained the lower unit oil I was suspicious
That it was empty not much came out at all. Hopefully all is well with the lower unit, when I turn the prop it sounds squeaky but turns freely.
If anyone has information on what year this is and where to get parts for it that may be cheaper I would appreciate that.

Thanks in advance.

New to points and condensers here. Are you stating that they didn't come with points and condensers or they might be warn down so bad nothing is left?

That's one of two all electric ignition systems those motors had: Either a silver switch box, or a black plastic one. Not interchangeable.

Does it have spark now?
