"I decided that my 1988 3.7 was probably due for a new fuel pump since its about 20+ years old! Removed it, and noticed some small cracks in the diaphram! Ordered a new one from my Merc dealer and when it arrived I noticed the arm was shorter and curved...not like the original one! Matched this up with the old one in front of the parts guy and he agreed it was different. So the parts guy calls The Tech. line at mercruiser and they say to try a thinner gasket..the new one came with a thick gasket! OK. Take it home and try it and it quickly runs out of fuel.. (empty's the bowl) stops running and won't re-start! Try the thick gasket...no go! So, I return it to the dealer and neither the parts guy or the mercruiser tech can figure out whats wrong. Has anyone else had this problem or is there something I am overlooking? The old pump works fine except for a few cracks in the diaphram! Any help would be appreciated!"

"see if you can mount it upsid

"see if you can mount it upside down, the old pumps had the filter on the top, some new ones have the filter on the bottom, had a post about 3 weeks ago about this, the boater had to make a little plate to cover the hole but it was the right part."

wemt to my local napa...no luck...the part that I bought new was the 861676A1 and did NOT work! Not sure about the upside deal!

im assuming that we are talkin

im assuming that we are talking about a 470. is there not an oem pump ar aftermarket pump that doesnt have to be modified? if there was no performance probs with the old on id reuse it .

"Yes, we are talking about a 3

"Yes, we are talking about a 3.7/470. there were no problems with the old pump except some small cracks in the diaphram. I can not find an aftermarket pump with the same length arm!"

"well ed if your not in a position where you can modify the new one, put the old one back on and when/if it fails go with an electric pump"

"Here's my brainstorm!..I

"Here's my brainstorm!..I was thinking about removing the small plug on the side of the old pump..take out the pivot pin, remove the arm..replace the old diaphram with a new one from the new pump..install the old arm..and drill and tap the hole and install a set screw to keep the pin from falling out! Think it will work?"

"install a set screw to keep the pin from falling out"

Sounds good; stake the set screw so it won't move. Or you could drive in a roll pin in place of a set screw. The spring is a b... to compress.

I'm going to give it a try

I'm going to give it a try and maybe use loctite on the set screw! Will let you know how it turns out! Thanks for the support!!!

"Well, today I removed the diaphram from the NEW fuel pump! First knocked the small plug holding the pivot pin in place. Removed the spring under the arm. Gently tapped the pump on the wood workbench till the pin was out far enough to remove with vise grip pliers. Did the same on the OLD fuel pump. I had already removed the screws that hold the bottom half of the fuel pump to the top. Drilled the proper size hole for a 5/16-18 set screw, being careful not to drill too far. Tapped the hole. Then I cleaned all of the grease and chips out of the fuel pump and placed some fresh grease inside and on the plunger of the new diaphram. Pushed the new diaphram in to the pump housing and inserted the old arm (the straight one) into the pump. Reinstalled the pivot pin, smeared loctite all over the screw and tightened it up! Then I reinstalled the bottom half of the pump and tightened up all of the screws securely noting the position of the IN and OUT ports! Installed the pump on the boat and after several cranks, (because the carb bowl was empty from the other pump)she fired right off and ran like a champ!!! (on the hose of course) I will have to wait till next week to try it out on the water! I always carry tools and such just in case, but I can't see why it won't work...what do you guys think? Thanks ED"

"I was wondering if a fuel pump for a Ford 460 would work?"

No the head is from a ford 460 but the block is a creation exclusive to Mercruiser. That's where the pump attaches to.
