"I have a 1988 3.7 while running it in the driveway with muffs, my young son turned off the water. The engine ran for approximately 5 minutes with no water. I noticed the rear exhaust manifold starting to smoke (rubber smell). Since this happened I have run the engine a few times for short periods and the rear lower exhaust manifold is heating up and smoking within minutes. I know the smoke is coming from the rubber boots between the manifold and exhaust pipe. I am "assuming" the impeller is now junk and the shutters are smoked. Can anyone tell me where to find the shutters? (Owners Manual not helping) Also, do you think anything else might be fried.

Thanks, Rick."

"Thank you Guy. Do you think

"Thank you Guy. Do you think my assumptions that the impeller could be bad as a result of no water for a few minutes is correct, or do you think I just fried the shutter? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks."

Both are correct assumptions.

Both are correct assumptions. Impellers can fry w/o water in less than 2 secs.; dry rubber against steel at high RPMs = hot friction.

"fried the shutter" comes from a flame thrower w/o water to cool it. Rubber coupler has to have been damaged from the flame thrower.
