"Anyone out there can help me?

"Anyone out there can help me? I have a 3.6hp Mercury and need the small bell housing for the starter fingers on the recoil pull starter unit. Where the 3 fingers come out and engage, 2 of the spots are broken bigger allowing a clanging noise at full throttle. Also, gas runs out of the front of that carb area when I first start up or when I lift up the unit toward me when the motor is mounted on the stern. That round hole exposes a throttle cyclinder looking thing that is activated by the speed lever on the front. Air sucks into that round hole. Is there a covering missing on that motor? Gas coming out of that is not normal for that motor is it? That's my questions: Where to buy a bell housing and is that round area normally open to the air?
Thanks,hebeson}}"

"Alan, Merc only made that mod

"Alan, Merc only made that model between 1981 and 1983. Most of the parts for it are now long discontinued and there doesn't appear that there was a whole lot of these motors produced in the first place.

In fact, before you posted I had never heard of a 3.6 Merc. So finding any parts more than basic tune-up items I would suspect would be more than a chore.

You can replace this entire motor for 200-300 bucks for a similar vintage (or newer) in a similar horsepower. I suspect that, that could be a cheaper option than trying to replace the parts you are looking for - so something to consider...."

Thank you Mr. Lamb for the inf

Thank you Mr. Lamb for the info. I will consider that advice. I thought that perhaps someone may have some access to older parts. al

I think these engines were mad

I think these engines were made for Mercury by Nissan/Tohatsu. That might be a source of parts etc. You can download the Tohatsu owner's manual online.

"Marty L., thanks for the lead

"Marty L., thanks for the lead. I need the plastic washer that is the first part on the prop shaft. It seats against the bearing. Wish I had access to a lathe. I was a tool and die maker for 30 yrs. I should get a used mill and lathe and immerse myself in work. Just kidding, retired. al"
