"Hey just a quick ?. its an 86 merc 35hp. last year ran fine little hesitant on starting @ first but always starts, tried to fire her up today and starter was not disengaging very slow turns not enough to start. now i know i need a new starter but there was smoke coming from the yellow wire to the bottom of the starter also my post on my battery was melted sum, is this because of the load to the starter or is there some type of electrical problem Thanks in advance Eric"

It could be the starter or the battery cables. Disconnect the cables and use jumper cables to test. If it still does the same thing you can either replace the starter or have it rebuilt at your local auto electric shop.

"The post on ur battery will melt if you have a high resistance conection...ensure the lugs are clean,terminals and battery posts are clean.

Remove the yellow wire going to the starter motor and clean the conection as it sounds like you have a high resistance on this conection also."
