"I recently just bought this 1988 bass tracker. It idles fine and revs up high fine but when it gear it will not run above 2800 rpms. it just bogs out with more throttle. Some times it dies but you can hear it coming not too often tho, it happens at trolling speed when there isn't enough throttle . When the motor is tilted up it dumps gas out. I am not sure where the serial number is located but i did find this one number but could not see all of it due to a stiff wire in the way. 41583. The hour clock only says 130. Is that very many for a boat this old? I put a couple hours on it myself already. Any ideas, advice or comments are greatly appreciated."

Sounds like there are cooties in the carb.

The bogging out around 2800 could indicate a partially clogged high speed jet.

The dumping of fuel could indicate a sticky float valve.

The "run ok" in neutral, but bogs in gear is also a classic symptom of crud in the carb.

That is very low hours for an 88 - over 20 years old, so do the math 130/20 = 6.5 hours a year run time on average.

If you don't use a boat you probably don't spend money to maintain it - sounds like yours is a victim of neglect.

I would start by pulling the carb, stripping her down and cleaning - rebuild if necessary - at minimum, new gaskets.

I would also throw in a waterpump kit and change the lower gear oil. A new pair of sparkplugs wouldn't hurt either.

Make sure the fuel filter is clean and use fresh gas, then give her a try again.

Don't run with a possible carb problem. It can prevent oil from getting to the cylinders and cause significant damage...."

Could it be the altitude that is my problem? I was running up in the mountains of Utah by duck creek. I live down by lake mead. I haven't tried it out down here yet. Sorry if this is a really dumb question and thanks for any help.

I put fresh gas and plugs in it and I took it out to the lake today and it ran alot better. It revs all the way up to 4500rpms and goes about 17mph according to the boat's speedo. It kinda dies out when trying to put it in gear and doesnt like to go into reverse. Altough after sitting at the dock for a while waiting for the truck to be parked it went into reverse just fine with out dying out. How fast should a 15ft bass tracker go with a 35hp motor?

"My 83 bass tracker II has no tach. I would do the ussual test, compression, spark, and then clean the carb. If thats good change the fuel pump diaphram, its cheap. Your serial number is off, if its an 88 the cowl should be black/grey with a red pin stripe.

Keep an eye on the starter attach bolts, they come loose and break the front engine case."
