"My boat and motor (1984 Johnson 35) have been in storage for 2+ years. When I brought it out for this fishing season, the starter will not crank and appears to be frozen (locked) up. Everything was working fine when I put the boat away. I have a new and fully charged battery and have by-passed the solenoid with a jumper straight from the batt to the starter. No turn. I am not able to turn the starter shaft with a wrench on the bendix retaining nut. I want to remove the starter to trouble shoot or replace. The starter parts breakdown shows only one long bolt through the starter housing into the block. Is this correct? Is a special tool required to remove this bolt or do you have to dis-assemble the whole power head to replace the starter? Any tips will be much appreciated."

Thanks a lot! A closer examination shows me exactly what you are talking about. I'll pull the starter tomorrow. I'll let you know what I find.
