35hp Evinrude impeller and seals

Quick question...

After changing the water pump every 2 years or so with no issues

I got a shade tree mechanic (found out after the fact) to Frankenstein my power head on a OLDer middle and lower unit. Water pump wasn't pissing so I replaced it.... now I'm getting milky gear oil dripping down the skeg from the shift linkage area in LU inside the 2 water screen areas!
Question A) Based on the leak apparently starting after the impeller change
And B)where the gear oil is leaking from can I simply replace gear shift seals?

I'm trying to avoid pulling bearing carrier etc...

Any advice appreciated

Some will argue.----The seals wear out from shafts spinning at 5000 RPM and 2700 RPM.----Install a complete seal kit.----And changing an impeller does not cause leaks to start !!
