"Hi everyone,
I've been having an intermittent problem with my 350xli (1997). Will start fine when it is cold. After a run it sometimes fails to crank at all. Once it cools down it cranks and starts without any problems. Would this most likely be the solenoid, neutral safety switch or the starter itself? How would you separate the 3 possibilities or is there something else I should check?

Thanks

John"

"Here's the deal: If the pinion shaft bushing in the starter is worn, that moves the gears out of mesh enough to produce hard hot starting. Works well cold, but... Old GM starters used to do that all the time. I made a fortune in college by "rebuilding them" (and simply changing the 20 cent bushings! Don't tell anyone, okay?)

Now, if yours is worn--and you have the two bolt up wards starter setup (that can be shimmed), all you need to do is reduce the shim thickness. If you don't have the shim setup, then the starter will need rebuilding (the cheapest way).

"Thanks for the feedback. I swapped the solenoids between my two engines and the problem migrated with the solenoid. Unfortunately, I've been having problems getting the correct one for this engine. Ordered a new one from my local dealer and twice I received the wrong type. They kept on sending me a solenoid that has two bolts for mounting (a standard GM type solenoid from what I'm told). Mine has three bolts for mounting, is smaller in diameter and is longer. I've also been on the phone with a crusader parts dealer and they say that according to everything they know that I should have a standard GM type solenoid. I'm somewhat stuck!! My boat is a 1997 but the engines according to the serial numbers are from 1996. Anyone have any ideas.

Thanks

John"
