"Did a complete tune-up (p

"Did a complete tune-up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor) on 1995 350XL and boat started up and idled smoothly. When I took the boat out and tried to open it up it bogged down and stalled around 1500 rpms. Engine would re-start and run in gear up over 1000rpm but would stall if I tried to bring it up over 1500rpms.

Suspected it could be the fuel filter/water seperator so I replaced them 2 days later. When I went to restart the engine it would run for a few seconds and then stall. Would slowly restart if I gave it throttle but would stall immediately. If I waited a minute it would restart and run longer, but eventually stall out. I waited 15 minutes and tried to restart with similar issues. I'm curious if anyone has any insights...I'm guessing its fuel delivery related and it could be fuel pickup upstream of seperators, a fuel pump problem, or carburator issue. If anyone could provide troubleshoot advice or any insight it would be greatly appreciated."

"If you have plain spin on fue

"If you have plain spin on fuel filters, you may have water in your tank that got through the filters and now is in your carb bowls. If this is the problem then you must take the carb apart and remove the water. Install Racor water / fuel seperators into your system. They do not allow any water to pass through a fuel filter and water can be drained manually at the bottom. Make sure after you install the new filters and clean out the carbs that you purge the fuel line to make sure clean fuel in lines. Also get some water remover treatment into your fuel tank and beware of running fuel with Ethenol blend unless you will be running out the fuel after fill up!"

"Thank you Robert, I will give

"Thank you Robert, I will give this a shot. I am curious what the effects of the ethenol blend are, as I believe here in NY fuel contains 10% ethanol. Is this more prone to become "bad" or to accumulate water in the tanks?

I do have Mercury spin-on filters installed, two in line which are supposed to be water seperators as well, the downside seems to be they do not have the clear visual bottom nor the drain.

Not sure it matters, but when the engine would run at idle I was able to rev it up over 4000rpm with no issue."

"The spin on fuel filters will

"The spin on fuel filters will stop water but if they fill up with water they allow the water to flow right through to your carbs, not good! Change them to Racor water fuel seperators, which will not allow water to pass. The ethenol will seperate after a few weeks into the bottom of your fuel tank and the ethenaol also draws moisture into the fuel tank. There are additives that will prevent the seperation if you store fuel for extened periods of time. Lot's of good reading availabe, just search Google on the subject!

If you can rev the enginge while parked then you do not have water in your carbs, they would not run that high RPM with water in them, the engine would stall if water gets into the fuel system."

"I just installed two new 5.7L

"I just installed two new 5.7L 300hp crusaders carbed. The port side has been dieseling badly when i shut off the ignition. I've heard it is timing, or too high idle, or bad fuel, or a vaccuum leak. What causes it? The last time, it caused the engine to hydrolock, still not sure of other damage yet, just got the water out of the pistons. How do I fix it?"

My Crusader was running rough

My Crusader was running rough at high RPMs. I changed the water seperator and put in a tank of fresh gas.
The starter was dragging so it replaced it as well. Now it will not start. The engines turns over with strong compression. Pulled a plug and it had fire so I assume the is rotary and distributor are good. I smelled gas pretty strong. Pulled the air filter off and turned the engine over. Gas squirted straight up out of the carb about 8 inches. Is this normal or could this possibly be why the engine will not start.
