"I Have recently acquired a 350 Redband 35hp engine, it starts and runs OK and I have just replaced the impeller so the water pump is fine

The problem I am having is that I cannot get the gear shift to "move" far enough, I can engage both forward and reverse, if I disconnect the controller cable and operate the shift manually

When I use the controller it does not seem to give me enough movement to engage reverse

Any ideas??? would be most welcome"

"Hi there!

I've experienced similar problems...

Check your control box, remove the shifter handle and see if there is an "interlock bush". Some are round, others semi-circular. They tend to break with time and could possibly hamper the shift action.

Does the shifter, when disconnected from motor, travel all the way forawrd and reverse? Maybe it has been opened before and internals are mucked up?

Kind regards!

"OPened the shifter yesterday,

"OPened the shifter yesterday, and I could not work it out, there is a round bush/wheel that interlocks into the speed controller and provides the pivot for the gear shifter

It does not seem to provide full movement

It says MercControl on the shift box, so I assume its the right one.

Do you know of any good diagrams as to how it fits together so I can check its right

Sorry to hear about the weather!!

"Hi there,

Not too sure of sites avail that will clarify it. Maybe you'll get some info from someone else?

"You might think about getting a seloc manual from this site,I did, they are excellent. Try adjusting the cables at the engine.Put into reverse and the shift commander as well and adjust cable to match, also check if there is play in the cable retainer recess, my tuppence worth."

Many thanks
I have the seloc

Many thanks
I have the seloc manual but it does not seem to give too much info on the selector

I will have another go at it this week

"There is an exploded view of the merc control on page 8-15.I would up load it but I'm not that able on computers,If you look at this page, note no.36,the shift lever has two small points into which no.22 the cam face sits,if these points are worn it will slide over the cam face and will not move the cable far enough to put it into reverse. I hope you can follow what I'm trying to say"

"Hi
Had another play with the controls, i disconnected the rod from the engine, and when I have the throttle in Neutral, and move the gear shift, then the rod moves about 25 mm max, then if I move the throttle fully open ie top speed then the rod moves about another 50 mm, this is without touching the gear shift.
This is all done with the engine shut down, of however it was running then the gear shift woudl be moving the extra 40 mm when it is in fullthrottle which seems really off.

any ideas

Regards

Mark"

"It doesn't take a lot to move shift shaft into gear and if it can be put in both gears manualy the problem ,I think, lies with your cables. Is there any travel by the inner cable before the plastic end starts to move the shift shaft? if there is, the cable needs replacing.M. G. Stitt Marine, Islandmagee, Northern Ireland,028 9338 2666,might be worth picking his brains,he would have a lot of kowhow with the older mercs. Thats called passing the buck

"Thanks for the feedback
It may be that I have a problem in the lower end,
If I engage the gears manually without the controls conneceted it takes the full travel of the shifter between forward nuetral and reverse, this translates to about 2.5 inches of travel on the slider (that attaches to the plastic end of the controller cable)
I have the forward gear and nuetral so not having reverse is more a pain than a necessity.
I will check the cables out over the weekend

"Hi there!

"Hi there!

Just occurred to me...

Are you sure that the lower gearcase link is aligned with the shift shaft? Sometimes, when impellor is replaced, the alignment goes awry...

Also, don't confuse the two cables, one if for RPM, other is for gear selection. You'll see that the gear selection cable will only move a defined distance, it only needs to select the gear. The throttle cable should give move movement as it needs to actuate the carbs. I've seen some installers getting it wrong, my boat was a case in point...

Hope this helps?

Weather getting better now, summer solstice was Saturday passed.

Regards!

Benjamin."
