"I have a 1986 Merc 25HP. I recently purchased cables and a control box for the engine. I hooked everything up but I'm confused about the gear shift cable. In the attached photo (if I was able to load it correctly) you can see the top of the gear shift lever. It looks like the motor is engaged in either forward or reverse but i'm not sure. I don't know the distance for the control cable in neutral...again, see the attachment. I'm not sure if there is some trick to this or how I can tell if the motor is in neutral. If I turn the prop it clicks in forward rotation but turns the flywheel (a little difficult) in reverse. Any help would be most appreciated.
