My 35hp Johnson shifts ok from reverse to neutral but won't shift from forward to neutral. When I checked the shift connector in the intake area I can push the rod down and it goes into neutral without a problem. I disconnected the remote to do this. Any adjustment inside the exhaust housing?

"Sorry, I spaced it. 1982 Johnson 35 hp, J35ECLND,
it doesn't shift into neutral from forward with the remote or with out the remote. It's a converted tiller arm to remote controls.

Thanks"

"When moving the shift lever back to neutral, it stays in forward and the prop spins. If I push down on the shift rod in the intake window, it has about 1/4" of play in the shift rod and goes into neutral. Is there a way to adjust the upper shift rod so it pushes down more?"

"Play in the shift rod of 1/4&

"Play in the shift rod of 1/4" is excessive.

If when moving the shift rod up and down thru that 1/4" of play, you cannot actually see any portion of the shift linkage moving at the powerhead, I could only assume that the play would exist with the linkage at the top of the shift rod under the powerhead. In which case, you would need to remove the powerhead to gain access to that linkage.

Is there an adjustment at the shift handle and the shift lever to take out any play? I think connection is fine at the upper rod to lever but it may be at the actuator cam more than the rod connection.
