35 hp Johnson stuck in gear

hello, I have a 16 foot star craft with a 1979 35 horsepower Johnson outboard model 35el79a. It kept kicking out of gear so I replaced the clutch dog. Was working great until I went to load and had no neutral or reverse gears. Had forwards. Would still start in forwards gear if it was set to neutral on the motor. Any gear you picked would move forwards still. Got home and took the side cover off and the bar that goes to the Lower unit was not moving as the motor was manually shifted. All the little things appeared to be moving proper on under the cover. Any help would be appreciated

Remove powerhead and repair the linkages.

How difficult is that to do? And how would I go about properly doing it?

Well-----Easy for me but I have absolutely no idea what your ability is.----At a shop the labor would add up quickly.-----See if YOU TUBE has a video to study.
