35 HP Johnson over heats

"Just bought the boat its 1977

"Just bought the boat its 1977 35 hp model 35wl77c and previous owner said he replaced the water pump last year, Went on test run with him worked perfect then took it out a few times and on the 3rd time it overheated and the house from the motor to the pee-hole was disconected and the end was melted, now wont even try and turn over. water pump again? what are some reasons it wont restart?"

"How long was the hose disconected while the motor was being ran? Even a short matter of time and it will shread your impeller. When you try to start it, is it turning over and just won't fire up?"

"Not sure how long the hose was off just took the cover off after it overheated and saw that hose was off, its the one that the water would drain form the motor out the back of the boat I belive, the end of it that should go into the motor was melted , maybe just from sitting next to the engine well it was hot. and now it wont even try and turn over, thinking maybe a wire somewhere melted due to heat ??"

"So was there water under the cover from where it should of ran into the hose? If there was no water then I'm sure the impeller whould need changed. It does sound like something fried. Maybe a wire! I would start small, and check batt. connection, switches, fuses, anything that doesn't cost you money to look at. Hopefully its something simple. Give it a real good look over."

"After going thru everything and finding the water pump propeller broke up and the cover that goes over the shaft from the motor to the pump melted, I also found the coils melted to the motor, would those being melted / exploded look, cause there to be no power at all, wont even attempt to turn over when turning the key, and lights dont work."

"what u have,is severe case,of overheat....u will need to repl the coils,melted wires,etc..and inst a new water pump KIT...before u order all those parts,see if u can turn the flywheel,by hand."

"Okay Thanks, and I can turn it somewhat easily, I didnt see any other melted wires, some of the tape around the wires was melted so I took all that off and am going to retape once I know it starts. Thanks for the advice"
