"I have been given this motor

"I have been given this motor as a gift for Christmas. It is the Whispering Power model. It supposedly has been gone through and in working order. My question is where do i find the tags to get the ID #'s and model numbers so i can determine what year it is and possibly get a manual for it.

"Kevin, that looks to be a lat

"Kevin, that looks to be a late 1950's model. I'm thinking there should be a (plate) right smack in the middle of the transom clamp.

The model number should look something like 35109..

If you can find the exact model number, Andrew who runs this site sells OEM manuals even going back that far or alternately Seloc's has a manual for 1 and 2 cylinder Ev's covering 1956-1970 model years (which should work for you even if you can't pin down the exact model year)...."

"Sorry i haven't got back

"Sorry i haven't got back to you guys sooner, been really busy. First off thanks a lot for all the info guys, appreciate it. I found the serial # 25920-19333 right where you said it was. It also says Big Twin Electric 25 so am i to assume it's a 25 HP and NOT a 35 HP like i was told it was ? Not sure what i want to do with it since it's so old. I mean how reliable could it be and for how long ? Hard to say probably even if it has been gone through and working like i was told but like i stated it was fixed up by a guy that has a small boat business so it's probably good to go. Just not sure what i want to do with it yet. Any idea how much it's worth ? I seen a couple on eBay going for $150 to $400 for the same type but from 7.5 HP to 25 HP. I was almost thinking of maybe trading it for a trolling motor, not sure. Appreciate all your help as i know nothing about such."

"Kevin, that is a 1955, 25 hor

"Kevin, that is a 1955, 25 horse model.

And yes, the value is not "great". A running model may be well suited to on older boat that has been restored where the owner is looking for an "original" motor to keep the look in order, but really as a day to day motor it's value lies in whether you have a use for it.

If not, the prices you have seen are probably realistic, but would suspect the actual selling price for a model such is this would normally be 200 (in excellent running shape) and somewhat less otherwise..."

"As for reliability, if it has

"As for reliability, if it has been taken care of, it would have many years of reliable service left in it. My main motor on my 14 ft aluminum boat for years was a 1955 10HP Johnson. That motor is still in great running shape, but I "upgraded" to a 1958 10HP Johnson. I made sure the ignition and water pump and impeller were in good shape before wandering far, but use them for travelling 10+ miles down the lake and have as much confidence in them as I would a brand new motor.
I run mine 25:1 TCW-3. Some will tell you that you can run it with less oil, but I wouldn't."
