I have a 1984 35hp Evinrude Mo

I have a 1984 35hp Evinrude Model #E35TELCRR Serial# E0381436 that has lost top end power and rpm. Max rpm was 5900 & now won't go over 5250. Engine runs smooth but boat will barely plane. The motor is on a 16' Alumnacraft that I use to pull the kids around on tubes. It used to have just enough power to give then a decent ride. Would top out at 22mph. All of a sudden it won't plane and idles erraticly. It did seem to idle a little funny the last time I used it though. I did a compression test and #1 is 103lbs & #2 is 118lbs. This seems marginal according to what I have read. Do these readings point to a rebuild. I tried new fuel and new plugs with no change although I was not to hopeful.Grateful for any help. I am a retired auto mechanic with limited 2 stroke experience if it matters. Would like to get her going for when the kids come back at the end of the month. Thanks again.

Thanks jwbmarine. It has a por

Thanks jwbmarine. It has a portable tank which I completely drained and refilled with fresh fuel. This was my first thought because it was the only thing done since the last time I used the boat. The fuel that came out looked good but still smelled like the cheap cologne they are selling as gas these days. But that is another story. Vent on tank is clear and no effect when pumping bulb at high speed. Doesn't feel like a fuel problem though. Runs nice and smooth with no hesitation but just does not have the ooomph that it had. I probably would not notice to much if not trying to pull a tube other than the idle being a little erratic. The fuel filter/screen is clear. When I changed the plugs I checked spark and it jumped 1/2" with no problem. The old plugs were fine. Nothing was touched prior to this problem appearing. Only new fuel was added. By the way I also changed the prop to eliminate that. No change. Kinda stumped here. Any ideas?

"rick,
I have a 79 evinrude that I have recently repurchased from a friend I sold to 10 years ago. last weekend I took it out and it started acting the same way that you described yours is acting. I remember when I owned it previously it did this once. if my memory serves me correctly it was a coil of some sort.(i also have limited 2 cycle experience) i still have to see if that is the problem now, but I thought I might share that with you in case it helps steer you in the right direction....post again if you get it figured out it might help me as well."

Thanks BlakeVH. It doesn't

Thanks BlakeVH. It doesn't seem like a spark issue but I will check it using a timing light as a scope while at speed and let you know. Anyone else have any thoughts. Joe Reeves or jwbmarine maybe.

"The difference in compression

"The difference in compression could be the resultof a clogged carburetor that is resulting in having the engine run lean on one cylinder.

Yes, I know that the engine has but one carburetor BUT a misadjusted or fouled carburetor will in many cases affect one cylinder before the other, trust me on this one.

Remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor, paying special attention to the brass high speed jet that's located in the bottom center portion of the float chamber. Clean it with a proper size piece of single strand wire.

The difference of 15 psi between cylinders is not a good sign BUT it may simply be due to stuck piston rings. I don't remember what the name of the substance is that you can run thru the engine to free stuck rings and remove carbon.... I'm sure that JWB can advise you of that and the procedure.

Thanks so much Joe. I will get

Thanks so much Joe. I will get a kit and go through the carb ASAP. I think the stuff is seafoam and I will try that first( depending when I get the kit) and see if it helps. If it does not level the cyls somewhat am I looking at a rebuild soon? I sure don't want to however if it is in the cards I might be better doing that now rather than playing games. By misadjusted do you mean idle mixture? Thanks again for sharing your experience as you have helped countless people. I will post with the results when I can.

"By adjustment, yes, I meant t

"By adjustment, yes, I meant the idle mixture as follows.

(Carburetor Adjustment - Single S/S Adjustable Needle Valve)
(J. Reeves)

Initial setting is: Slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running.

Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

Note 1: As a final double check setting of the slow speed valve(s), if the engine has more than one carburetor, do not attempt to gradually adjust all of the valves/carburetors at the same time. Do one at a time until you hit the above response (die out or spit back), then go on to the next valve/carburetor. It may be necessary to back out "all" of the slow speed adjustable needle valves 1/8 turn before doing this final adjustment due to the fact that one of the valves might be initially set ever so slightly lean.

Note 2: If the engine should be a three (3) cylinder engine with three (3) carburetors, start the adjustment sequence with the center carburetor.

When you have finished the above adjustment, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.
