"Picked up a slightly used ARC

"Picked up a slightly used ARCO starter on ebay the other day and the pinion gear is stuck out and i cant get it to go back in. Hooked it up to my truck battery and ran it but it is stuck out. Any suggestions?

"Ah-hah! Been there, done that. It's perfectly okay. The only way that pinion can retract is when the engine starts (or tries to). Wierd but effective.
