"The refurbishment of my LM318 continues and I have now purchased a replacement OEM intake manifold from a wrecked Chrysler 360 marine engine. The seller gave me a carby wedge with the intake manifold saying it MUST be used. My LM318 engine never had a carby wedge and the carby sits flat on the intake manifold.

So what is the purpose of the carby wedge and should I install it anyway on my old 318 intake manifold. Will the engine performa any better if I install the wedge. Carby is a Carter 4bbl AFB.

regards,

Scott."

"The "carby" must be level--that's the reason for the wedge. If your motor is level now, then the wedge is unneeded.

"Hi Jeff,

By level do you mean level when the boat is at rest or do you mean level when the boat is on the plane? ie. the boats running angle changes.

Anyway, what is the reason the carby has to be level? Is it to do with the floats? Why should the engine perform better?

Regards,

Scott."

"..."Anyway, what is the reason the carby has to be level? Is it to do with the floats?"

Correct.

..."Why should the engine perform better?"

A carb can flood if it's not level, but there is some amount of 'crookedness' allowed (or carbs would never work).

My carbs are level while sitting, but not perfectly level while on plane. That's apparently not a problem, but it sure says a lot about the advantages of fuel injection!

Jeff."
