"Hey everybody! I am in the process of replacing a head gasket on a 1971 318 that had been rebuilt by the previous owner. When I pulled the head, I found that some of the water jackets were gasketed over. I was wondering if there is a reason for that or if its like everything else the previous owner did - just plain wrong! The engine is fwc and these jackets appear to be the cause of gasket failure.

Thanks for any help you can provide,
Matt"

Could be. I'm told there are two different types of heads with different hole setups. I'm sure you'll kake damn sure th enew head gaskets are the right ones!

"Yeah...that doesn't sound right. Compare the passages in the heads to those of the block. If the holes correspond/match up, they should not be blocked.

If you conclude that the previous owner did, in fact, use the wrong gasket, you should probably assume that the other head was done the same way."

"As far as I know, Chrysler made all LA head gaskets so that you can't put them on backwards (like Fords) and screw things up. Perhaps somebody put Magnum gaskets on an LA engine? Something sounds fishy here."

"Thanks for the reassurance. Yeah, I know that the other engine is probably wrong as well, but don't want to think about that right now. Thanks again!"

If your talking about the front top water porton the block , the gasket was revised to keep the water from entering from the pump & then exiting right back out to the front port to the thermostat housing. Forcing the water to flow along the bottom row of the port in the block helps in cooling the heads evenly around the exhaust side moving back toward the intake & thermostat housing in a automotive app. We run cold so there is not as much concern..
