318 fuel pump

Hi everyone new to the forum and have just purchased my first boat with an inboard engine. The electric fuel pump runs from a relay which only allows it to run when there is oil pressure, this seems like a good safety feature but makes for a lot of cranking when starting cold. What do you guy's think and do you have simialler set up?

Had that setup too at one time. Drove me nuts! I installed a momentary push button circuit to counteract it and solved the problem. Here's how to do it:

1. Find a 12 volt source that's hot with the key in RUN.

2. Run that wire to a new, momentary switch (a horn or kill button switch works well).

3. Run through the switch to the 12 volt lead on your fuel pump

Here's the new starting procedure:

1.Turn on ignition

2. Hit the 'fuel pump priming button' for about 5 seconds then

3. Grind the starter and away you go!

I'm not sure, but would there be a problem with running a lead to the "start" post on the ignition switch? That way the oil pressure switch would be bypassed at start.

I did a very similar fix... I connected the push button switch "across" the oil pressure switch, i.e., I connected the two wires of my PB switch to the two wires on the oil pressure switch.

That effectively is how it works now... except you need to crank the engine forever if the carb bowl is dry.

You can do it either way, but MY way prevents cranking the motor a bunch before the bowl fills up.

PS: One caution on "instant starting" motors: One needs to wheel them over FIRST, listening carefully for any indication of water getting in the cylinders and locking them up. If they crank nice and smoothly, THEN do the carb priming thing. I shudder to think of those EFI motors out there that fire right up!

Thanks again guy's for the follow up. Errr had a kit put in the carb had the non functioning accel pump and auto choke sorted and now starts nicely.
