I've made a mistake while trying to change my starter. I got a 1973 Riverqueen with a Chyrsler 318. The starter got wet, rusted stopped working...long story but I needed to get it replaced. Went to auto store, got a starter it looked identical but now it does not fit into the bell housing correctly. I gave my old starter as a core, which was my mistake. I don't have any numbers from the original starter and have no idea how to find the correct starter. The starters on this site and other do not look like the starter i removed. The original starter does not have any threaded holes. The removed starter goes underneath the engine on the right side. if anyone can help with the model number and type that would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks

first off you should not use auto parts in marine applications! Try Hurricain marine they will have what you need. if you want a gear reduction starter try http://www.marineengineparts.com they will have newer style starters that will work for your application.

Bob, yes I've learned this lesson. I've had the boat over a year now and just realized the part are very differnt. Thanks for the information and post back once I find the correct starter.

It is a good idea to annually remove a starter motor. I treat mine with TECTYL. If you can afford it, have another as a spare .It is a good idea. This way, one is removed from the marine environment for a year. Salt water boating. If you are unsure have a talk to an auto electrician about the prevention process for a starter motor.

Bob it is a Valvoline product. Google " Tectyl " try tectyl.valvolineeurope.com . I would expect it is available in the USA and Canada. If not there will be a similar product. Another suggestion is to Google " rust prevention for starter motors " . If you think of another phrase google it. You will be surprised what you can turn up. I have 4 spare second hand starter motors and one in use. Your marine spares are cheap compared to Australia. Fred
