"Drivin me nuts, just had a reputable mechanic do a total rebuild on 318. Gave him a block connected to Borg 71 and V drive, block was no good so he used a block that was from a stern drive, bolted the flywheel housing and gear to it from the V drive, which has a rear mounted upper starter. The starter will not engage, it appears the ring gear is 1/2 inch low in diameter. So my long winded question is, are the ring gears diff on a 318 with a V drive, versus a sterndrive, and if so, where the heck do I get the right one. Now I gotta pull the engine again, arrrrrgh!"

"Captain Kirk:

"Jim,
With Borg or Paragon, Chrysler uses flywheel p/n 2846 924. The ring is p/n E7770M. The ID of the ring is 12.0 inch. The ring usually has the p/n stamped on the side. Other configurations use different flywheels and starters.
Good luck,
Dave"
