318 cooling issue

I have been having an ongoing cooling issue with my 318 cid. I am losing the same amount of coolant each time I go out on the water. Is this due to overfilling my coolant levels to the top exch time? I had one mechanic state this may be the issue - but how could I test this theory? I obviously do not want to assume there is plenty of coolant in the tank for long (4+ hour runs). I do not see any leaks...Thoughts?
