If the old Poly 318's were big blocks, can I yank the engine out & use the same bell housing with 383/400 or a 440?

"Hey Fred - the old poly's

"Hey Fred - the old poly's were not big blocks. Poly's, or "A" engines are the small block predecessors of the "LA" engines.

Alghouth many/most components from the Poly 318's won't bolt up to the LA 318's, one of the things that actually does bolt up is the the bell housing.

Unfortunately, you'd need a big block bell if you go to the 383+."

"Fred - just to elaborate slig

"Fred - just to elaborate slightly on that last post, I should have added that you're not mistaken in your understanding that poly 318's were often referred to as "big blocks" or "wide blocks".....but that was based more on it's appearance than spec. It's really a misnomer that stuck around.

To that point, I didn't mean to imply that you were using the term "318 big block" in error."
