"When I turn ignition, nothing happens. However, when I attach a power pack with jumper cables, the engine turns over and fire up with no issues. Had battery checked and the 5 hours of charge yesterday has given a fully charged battery. I assume that a discharge is happening somewhere. One other thing, when I connect the battery a spark happens which implies that something is always live-----any suggestions from anyone?"

"shorted alt, remove alt wires, try reconnecting battery cable.
If it`s still there , start tracing back"

"Diode is bad according to test----everything else is good on alternator. However, when disconnected, still get spark from battery----so would my problem be in the coil or starter?"

"Neither; you said they work in your first post. Is there a clock on the boat, radio left on, something powering up? Fix the alternator and I'll bet all is ok."

"If you are smart enough to check and do a diode test then try this next.

Remove all the cables going to the positive terminal on the battery.

Hook you meter probes up to the AMP terminals on the meter.

connect one probe to the battery and the other to the main battery cable that goes to the starter.

If your reading is more than .07 amps you have a problem.

If this is so then start by disconnecting the main wire harness cable connector at the motor, this disconnects all the dash components.

whats the meter read now?

If it is good (</=.07 amps) then you have a problem at the dash.

If it is not good then you have a bad altinator!!

If it is good before the 2 steps above then hook one at a time each other positive wire you removed from the battery to the amp meter probe with the large positive cable is attacthed to now.

If the meter goes above .07 amps then you have found your source.

I have seen altenators/radios, be the source of battery draw.."

The alternator output is elect

The alternator output is electrically connected to the battery. If the alt. has shoted diode(s) then it acts like a drain on battery current. A diode is a one way gate; short the gate and it becomes 2 way.
