The alternator belt on my 3.0L

The alternator belt on my 3.0L broke. I have 2 new ones (one spare that I'll tie out of the way) ready to do the job. First question: Will the motor have to be supported or suspended when I remove the two engine mount bolts and spacer? Second question: The engine did not overheat (170 deg) but was run with the belt broke for a few minutes. Anything I may have damaged or should check-out before heading out again?

"you don't need the support if you only remove the two bolts and the spacer on the alternator side. I've done it many times. And no, at 170 deg, you should be fine.

If you really want to support the engine, an easy way is to grap 2 bar stools, metal bar (bench press bar), and a rope. Set each bar stool on each side of the engine. Run the bar across them. Tie the rope to the bar and down to the mount. Now go get some wood blocks or something and slide them in between the bar and the stool to lift the bar up and tighten the rope. Soon enough it will be enough tension to actually hold the engine. Tried and true.

"The water pump on motor gives the water direction more than it pumps it, The in coming water from raw water pump will cause some circulation in motor."

I recently lost the belt on my

I recently lost the belt on my merc 3.0. I didn't have to support the engine when I replaced the belt. I did have to do a little prying to realign the bolts for reassembly. I ran mine hot for only a few minutes until I realized it was overheating. In this time I burned the exhaust flapper located in the exhaust elbow close to the lower unit. The piece actually fell and was giving me partial exhaust blockage. I knew something was wrong after replacing the belt and seeing that the engine continued to overheat. It also dropped RPM's at WOT after about 20 to 30 secs. Hopefully you won't have this problem.
