30hp mercury quit suddenly while in use

hello.
have a 1994 30 hp mercury outboard, 2 stroke, oil injected
serial 0G105780
had impeller replaced recently
brought it home
started right up
ran on water
stopped running while driving, did not sputter, just died. will not re-start
removed fuel filter reservoir
small amount of black "sludge" in cup and on filter-looked like dissolved o-ring
have not checked spark or compression

Check spark and compression before you go any further. No sense trying to chase down a fuel issue if you have toasted a stator. The "stopped dead" would tend to indicate an ignition problem.
