30E Carb Float Level

Yes, it actually is 100% Yamaha, built for Merc from discontinued parts.

Yamaha and Merc had a long history together (that ended recently). Back in the late 70's/early 80's Merc was looking for a line of motors to market, primarily in Asia, at a lower cost than they could swing with their normal Merc line. Yami was was already building the majority of the powerheads for Merc, so they came up with deal that worked for both of them.

Yami started producing motors that they had discontinued, branded them as "Mariners", and Merc got a "no frills", "non-current" technology motor that could be sold at substantial discount compared with a "regular Merc", or a current Yamaha for that matter.

Anyhow, back to your real question.

With the carb upside down, and the bowl off, the measurement between the top edge of the mixing chamber (where the bowl gasket is sitting) to the top edge of the float (as you are looking at it - it's upside down, so really the instruction should say "bottom" of the float) the measurement should be .69 to .73 inches (17.5-18.5 mm) - measured at the side opposite the hinge.

Wow. I always heard the Mariners were kind of a (if you'll excuse the phrase) "red-headed step-child":p to Mercury, but the word "discontinued" is a scary one when associated with engines of any kind.

Thanks tons for the info. Now I'll know how to set the float when my new needle/ seat assy. gets here Wed or Thurs. The engine has been loading up to the point of dying and then I have to let it sit a little while before it will start again. Then it runs a little bit and it starts over. Can't get but about 2,500-3,000 rpm out of it either. I hope this does it.
