305 oil level

I have a 1977 305/228 Mercruiser & believe it takes 5 qts. oil with new filter but the dipstick indicates a high oil level. The old oil was completely drained prior to refilling, according to the dipstick. I used 5 qts Mercruiser 20/40 oil & 35-866340K01 Mercfilter. After the oil/filter was changed previously by a dealer I noticed the same high dipstick level. Is this normal, or wrong dipstick, or does the 305 not take 5 qts? The serial # is 4877781.

How high on the dipstick? It won't hurt anything if its say half a leater over

Smaller oil filter since 1977

try a larger oil filter for a V8 chevy motor.

It used to oil filter used about a quart, today it is half that with the smaller filter

1.25 inch high on the dipstick but I don't know how to equate that to volume of oil. This is after running the engine about 10 min also. The new merc filter is a fair amount smaller than the previous Sierra filter that was installed by a shop. As I mentioned the dipstick level showed high after the shop changed the oil also. I could change to a larger filter as the other reply suggested but

Ayuh,..... I dump in 4 qts., start it, check for leaks, let the filter fill, 'n shut it down,....

Then check the oil level, 'n fill to the full line,.... Rarely are 5 full quarts used anymore,....
