Hi, I have a 2009 30 hp merc outboard SN- ON 115734 my problem is, we are not getting charge tothe battery, we disconnected the battery and put the metre on while it wasrunning and the output was only 6 volts. we also checked the big fuse and it'sgood. Would greatly appreciate any help with this matter kind regards, Tony.

I'm told that removing the battery connections while running can over voltage the rectifier and damage it so you don't want to be doing that. Without the battery load no telling what kind of voltage output you will have on what scale on your meter.

Have the battery load tested and charge it up. If the battery is good, move on to the charger.

The charger picks up power from coil(s) under the flywheel. There will be 2 wires usually....on larger Mercs they are yellow. Follow them till you get to connections and open the connections. Meter back to the coils and you should get a very low resistance...like zero plus the resistance of your meter test leads. Then, on a higher scale meter between a wire and the engine block or wherever the battery - is connected. You should have an open circuit.

If you pass that test, your rectifier module is bad. Follow the yellow leads to it if you can't find it and don't forget to plug them back together before you use the engine again.

HTH,
Mark

I installed a voltmeter in my dash to monitor what the charge circuit is doing. Just connect the + terminal to any purple wire and the - terminal to any ground or black wire under the dash.
